Socioeconomic Challenges -Debating Public Policy Issues
(Coming Soon!) |
| Author

| Price

| ISBN CODE

This book looks at Malaysia’s
ability to respond to the challenges of globalisation, a subject that
should preoccupy the country for many years to come. What with the commencement
of the Asean Free-Trade Area (AFTA) in 2003, the movement towards the
formation of Asean+3 (China, Japan and South Korea), and the prospects
of establishing free-trade areas with Australia and New Zealand, the
challenges for greater competition will increase substantially.
However, the question is,
Are we ready? Is Malaysia competitive enough to confront the challenges
of globalisation? By commenting critically but constructively on Malaysia’s
public policy issues as they unfold, as well as the nation’s ability
to respond to globalisation that it entails, Navaratnam warns that Malaysia
will fail to attain the goals of Vision 2020 if we do not enhance our
competitive edge.

The Dao De Jing Manuscript
at Mawangdui was unearthed in 1973. A New Perspective on the Dao De Jing
is based on that manuscript which is considered to be the most accurate
by most experts. The language and grammar then were very much different
from those of the present day. The authors are particularly interested
in Laozi’s intention when he wrote the text. Was it for the gatekeeper
who blackmailed him into writing a book as a price for his passage through
the gate or for humankind that he wrote these words. Laozi’s mentioning
of the “Word of Heaven” might antagonise the Emperor who was supposed
to be the Son of Heaven. This perspective is taken into account in this
new translation and interpretation. Victor
C.C. Khor was born in 1934 in Xiamen, Fujian Province, China. He completed
his primary school education there before migrating to Malaya in 1947.
He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture (Bombay University)
in 1961 and a postgraduate Diploma in Town Planning (Leeds) in 1964.
He had worked in Manchester, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia as an
architect and town planner. Upon retirement, Khor studied Theology and
obtained a Bachelor of Theology from the Melbourne College of Divinity
in 1991.

Taijiquan- Supremacy of the Tai-Chi Mind |
| Author

: 967 978 792 3 |
Beyond Taijiquan gives
an indepth knowledge of the orthodox Taijiquan. Many practitioners of
Taijiquan know the movements and the techniques of the martial art thoroughly
but lack the understanding of the condition of the mind when practising
the art. This book goes beyond the forms. The readers who are familiar
with the forms will have no difficulty in following the explanations
which are told in story form to help understand the concept and the
students will achieve certain attainment progressively the qi-gong way
of practice, the attainment of the all-important Taiji internal Jing
power, the effortless way in Taiji tuishou, the unique pugilistic excellence
of the art, the clear definitions of many Taiji terms, etc.
The story begins with Alan
going out in search of the effortless martial art. He then enters into
a dream in which he comes face to face with the legendary Taiji masters
of the 19th century. The theme of the story is the schism that splits
the school of Taijiquan into two rival camps, namely, the Qi-zong and
Fa-zong. The former emphasises the qi-gong approach while the latter
favours the training of the techniques. The rivalry culminates in the
Wudang Summit where the two factions pit against each other in polemics
and martial skill.
Wong Choon Ching had his primary and secondary education in Chinese
schools. He graduated from the National University of Singapore with
a BA (Hons) in History in 1965. He was the first to introduce the Chen
Style Taijiquan to Malaysia in 1985. In 1987 and 1988 he won the championship
in the Malaysian National Taiji Competition and in the latter year he
emerged as the second runner-up in Taijiquan in the World Wushu Competition
held in Hang Zhou, China. In the following year, his team of nine students
beat the Singapore counterparts in a tuishou competition. Since then,
he has retired from active Taiji activities.

| Globalisation
and the New Realities |
| Author
: Mahathir Mohamad |
| Price : US$ 15.90
|
| ISBN CODE
: 967 978 818 0 |
There is now a worldwide public backlash
against the effects of globalisation, which had once been thought of
as an inevitable and universally good force. In this book, Dr Mahathir
Mohamad provides an incisive critique of the main aspects of globalisation
and an explanation for this changing tide of opinion against the concept
of globalisation.
Globalisation, deregulation and liberalisation in a borderless world
must be handled with care as they are means to an end—not ends in themselves.
Globalisation must result in a better life for all. Though the mobility
of capital flows across borders is an efficient way of allocating resources
globally and channelling them to developing countries, such mobility
creates volatility and provides an opportunity for speculative attacks
against currencies that threatens the economic stability of less developed
countries.
Dr Mahathir has been warning the world of the inequities and dangers
of globalisation years before it was fashionable to criticise this concept.
His lack of inhibition in speaking his mind—even when his opinions go
against conventional wisdom—is now well documented. He pulls no punches
when he describes the events of the Asian financial crisis of 1997,
the mechanics of currency speculation and the effects of the volatile
inflows and outflows of foreign funds, as well as the measures Malaysia
took to counter the crisis.
Policymakers, researchers and those who want to know about the current
trends in globalisation—and about its pitfalls—will find this timely
and compelling reading.
DR MAHATHIR MOHAMAD has
been Malaysia’s prime minister since 1981. As the architect and strategist
of modern Malaysia’s phenomenal growth over the last decade of the 20th
century, he is the initiator of Malaysia’s Vision 2020 and the Multimedia
Super Corridor.

| Guide
to Asset Securitisation in Malaysia |
| Author
: Sam Chay |
| Price : US$ 23.90
|
| ISBN CODE
: 967 978 819 9 |
Many initiatives to develop the bond market in Malaysia have been
undertaken by the Securities Commission, including the release of guidelines
on asset-backed securitisation in April 2001. Asset-backed securities
(ABS) form an important component of a deeper and more active bond market,
and the guidelines serve to facilitate securitisation transactions as
well as the issuance of ABS.
The guidelines are only the first step towards developing asset securitisation
in the country and further efforts will be focusing on, among other
things, the tax and accounting framework surrounding securitisation
transactions.
This book provides practical advice on relevant aspects of asset securitisation
and explains how asset securitisation works. Although many have heard
of this term, many still lack adequate knowledge about and understanding
of the inner workings of this structured financial product.
Written for both experts and non-experts, this book furnishes useful
and practical information on how asset securitisation is structured.
It is compulsory reading for bankers, corporate finance managers, structured
finance experts and corporate treasurers, as well as those interested
in acquiring a more thorough understanding of how asset securitisation
works.

and Business |
| Author
: Nik Mohamed Affandi bin Nik Yusoff |
| Price : US$ 15.90
|
| ISBN CODE
: 967 978 768 0 |
Islam offers alternative business practices
and perspectives many of which are universal in nature and quite similar
to conventional ones. However, there are some which are different and
unique: for example, the principle of partnership and sharing of both
profit and loss in Islamic lending.
Islam requires a proper balance between commercialism and humanitarianism,
and between profit and social responsibility. This balanced approach
therefore offers a ready solution to serious current problems of profiteering,
consumer exploitation, irresponsible corporate governance and environmental
degradation.
Islamic business practices maximise all the positive aspects of business:
examples include honest business conduct, reasonable profit, fair competition,
high standard of service culture, endearing business partnership and
cooperation, etc. Islamic business ensures a proper balance between
monetary and spiritual profit. It also strengthens economic justice
and enhances business harmony.
It is fascinating that a number of important business principles were
introduced by Islam more than 14 centuries ago: examples include the
principle of minimum wage for employees, basic consumerism principles
such as the right of buyers to return purchased goods, the principle
of venture capital, etc.
These are some of the highlights of Islamic business practices and perspectives
discussed in this book, besides discussions on many other interesting
and practical features of Islamic business.
ISLAM AND BUSINESS is the
author’s second book. His first book, ISLAM AND WEALTH, was published
in 2001. Both books are complementary as businessmen constitute the
majority of the wealthy.

|
| Author
: Edited by Ng Tieh Chuan |

Why is Dr Mahathir
Mohamad a visionary? Simple, unlike many people, he has the ability
to see the Big Picture. He can paint a picture but he is not an artist;
he can anticipate trends and the opportunities embedded in such trends
but he is not a clairvoyant. His thoughts have no limits and he does
not believe in the impossible. His is a “can-do” attitude where the
unreachable is reachable. I will contend that, as a visionary, he can
see with his eyes closed. Unlike some people who go through the days
of their lives with glorious dreams and never having the guts to act
on such dreams and make them happen, he is the opposite. He had the
guts to stand up for what he believed in and was kicked out of the party
he loved for thinking the unthinkable—a developed and prosperous Malaysia.
He had the guts to make a comeback and put into practice his vision.
The result is modern-day Malaysia.
This book is a testimony
to such a vision. Would he face criticism at home and abroad for such
a vision? Definitely. Would he make mistakes? Yes, he will, but neither
would dampen his enthusiasm. Dr Mahathir's vision for Malaysia and Malaysians
is a worthy cause. Is that asking too much?

The remarkable thing
about the Malaysian economy is not how far it has come but how well

Malaysia has been acknowledged as the richest and best managed Islamic

enviable political stability and its unique brand of social engineering
that has strengthen social racial harmony in one of the most complex

P.Ramlee was the quintessential Malay entertainer par excellence,
the Malay Noel Coward, if you like- actor, composer, singer, film-maker.
In his own lifetime, P.Ramlee created a myth of what a boy unschooled
in music and in the performing arts could attain. For the world, he
became a symbol of the eternal genius of music, acting and directing.
Despite the heights and brillance he had attained on the screen and
in the music world, he remained a humble person. This is an essential
biography offering a wealth of information about P.Ramlee, the man and
his work. He is, after all, one of the glories of a cultural heritage
which deserves to be far better known in Europe, and indeed, throughout
the whole world.

on Asia |
| Author
: Mahathir Mohamad |
| Price : US$ 12.90
|
| ISBN CODE
: 967 978 632 3 |
In REFLECTIONS ON
ASIA, Dr Mahathir says much that needs to be said about Asia and the
rest of the world. He speaks his mind on how Asia can reinvent itself
after the chaos of the Asian crisis of 1997: by reexamining the way
the global economic system functions and challenging some of the most
fundamental tenets of global capitalism.
Understand the man and
his thoughts by reading what he has to say about the crucial issues
of our times: Asia’s road to recovery, currency controls, globalisation,
capitalism, democracy, Islam, Asian values, China, Japan, Malay politics,
etc. By analysing and bringing into focus these issues, he hopes to
encourage sober and rational discussion of them by concerned and intelligent
world citizens at this crucial juncture of the world’s evolution.
He is the author of A New Deal for Asia and The Voice
of Asia: Two Leaders Discuss the Coming Century (with Shintaro Ishihara).

Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia's
fourth Prime Minister, is known for his original ideas and incisive
plain speaking. Both traits are grippingly evident in this book where
he takes a hard look at certain ways of thinking and living that are
vying for supremacy in the modern world in general, and Malaysia's Malay
community in particular. With characteristic directness Dr. Mahathir
explodes fallacies and exposes distortions concerning Islam, communism,
freedom and discipline, and the concerns of this world and the next.

Economic Con-Game- Development Fact or Fiction? |
| Author
: Piya Mahtaney |
| Price : US$ 21.90
|
| ISBN CODE
: 967 978 821 0 |
For all the brouhaha about reform and the avowed benefits of free-market
policies in the 1990s, the quick-fix solution for underdevelopment continues
to elude us. Through an incisive narrative of the misconceptions and
misconstrued notions that have blinkered economic judgement for decades,
Piya Mahtaney argues that the underpinnings of economic terrorism are
embodied in the stark contrasts between unbridled affluence ensconced
in minuscule enclaves and unrelenting endemic poverty.
We may finally have arrived at the crux of contemporary economics which
impinges not so much on evaluating the commercial profitability of globalisation
as it does on examining two distinct possibilities that will decide
the economic destiny for a long time to come. Either ‘globalism’ can
result in development or it cannot. If it can—although so far it hasn’t—then
its limitations have to be surmounted, and if its purview does not extend
beyond tactical commercialism then the immense hype about it in recent
years is meaningless.
Is there a crisis of imagination or are there deeper issues at stake?
In answering this crucial question, Mahtaney looks at the dilemmas and
paradoxes that befuddle strategic thinking on the subject and in so
doing reveals a sinister fact: there exists a crisis of implementation
that is perpetrated by a medley of vested interests which deliberately
flout the rulebook of sound economics to make decisions that benefit
the superstructure and adversely impact the majority of us.
PIYA MAHTANEY is a development economist who has worked as a journalist
with the Economic Times which is part of the Times of India Group.

Islamic Gold Dinar |
| Author

| ISBN CODE
: 967 978 825 3 |
Since the Islamic gold dinar concept was mooted by Dr Mahathir Mohamad,
the Prime Minister of Malaysia, it has aroused the interest of the public
on the nature and benefits of this new Islamic gold payment and settlement
system.
This book looks at the problems inherent in contemporary financial
systems. Taking the 1997 Malaysian economic and financial crisis as
an example, it shows that the fundamental cause of business cycles,
unemployment and inflation is rooted in some of the features of the
present-day financial system, namely fiat money, fractional reserve
requirements and interest rates. It then shows how these features also
indirectly bring about many social problems to such an extent that they
threaten the culture and sovereignty of nations. Even Islamic banks
cannot truly operate on Islamic principles in the present system. Most
Islamic financial products are tied to the market interest rate—the
very thing they are supposed to avoid.
After delving into the problems of the present monetary system, it
then argues how a return to a gold payment system—like the Islamic dinar—could
solve many of the woes of today’s economic system. A return to such
a system is not only desirable from the economic, political, social
and religious perspectives, but also urgent in the present era of globalisation
and impending world recession, besides providing a conducive environment
for Islamic economics, banking and finance to flourish.

This book is testimony to the rich architectural
heritage of the state of Selangor. More than 40 buildings of historic
or aesthetic importance have been specially painted by the distinguished
artist Chin Kon Yit, with detailed commentaries by architect and conservationist
Chen Voon Fee. A historical context is provided by the introduction
by John M. GuUick, author of many standard works on Malaysia and its
history.
The oldest structure in the book is the
fort at Kuala Selangor, built in the second half of the eighteenth century.
One of the most recent is the Main Terminal Building of Kuala Lumpur
International Airport. The totality of the book includes mosques, state
monuments, palaces, schools, churches, temples, offices, banks, even
shophouses, in styles reflecting the richly complex history and culture
of the state of Selangor over the past three centuries.
There is much to admire in these fine
buildings, and the book will be of lasting interest to anyone connected
with Selangor, and to those interested in the preservation of its historical
treasures. Architects will trace with interest the responses of their
colleagues over the decades to the challenges posed by the tropical
climate and a multicultural environment; and visitors to Malaysia will
be encouraged to seek out an array of sites well worth visiting and
yet easily accessible from the nation's capital. The book is published
to mark the coronation of His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafaddin ldris
Shah, Sultan of Selangor, in 2003.
